Screen 1: Dance with Piano Improvisation

For the final product, we will project dancer's movements while improvising on the piano and using other visual effects.

I changed the original format of the movie by using a mirror effect which served to express loneliness and self-consciousness in the mind. In this movie, the dancer is constantly moving and talking to herself; she feels lonely and her mind is in a constant state of wonder. Sometimes she denies her ego, however, she is also reconciling with herself. Finally, at the end of the movie, she embraces herself and her loneliness.

The text images are constantly changing; the images express people's loneliness in modern society, which is a complex desire and wondering and endless feeling of loneliness in our life.

We completed piano improvisation with visual images and sound effects. An-Yi Nien made impressive visual images and text images along with the poem, "Waste Land". Also, Yoojung improvised her performance beautifully while playing the images from the screen.

For our future performance, we will use 3 screens to project dancer's movements, moving visual images, and text images. The Screen 1 is for a dancer (right side), Screen 2 for the text images of the poem (left side), and Screen 3 is for the piano and loneliness images (center).

I made this sound file with Protool, a sound editing program in Studio D. First, Yoojung and Kay participated in recording session to record "Waste Land" in Korean and Chinese. Second, I added sound effects to make a ping-pong delay into the original sound.

Final Project Plan

Our team had a meeting for the Internet2 project and planned to create new multimedia music performances using Internet connection and other technological mediums. After a few group meetings, we concluded that "loneliness" is a theme that many people can relate to today. We found that T.S Eliot's, "Waste Land" , fully expresses people's loneliness in our modern society. We will use English, Chinese, and Korean text translations of "Waste Land" to see how sound effects can create different impressions.

To sum up, we will make a music and dance improvisation with visual images and sound effects while connecting online through Skype or MSN. The following statement is our final project plan:

Problems in Music Conservatory Education: 3. Summary

Music conservatories should examine their traditional curriculum context in which music is produced, experienced, and evaluated. They should be aware of the fact that the significant portions of college students are now ethnic minorities and many universities have incorporated their diverse musical traditions into course offerings. The music of immigrant cultures became an important part of American music.
Conservatories should change problematic curriculums as soon as possible. It is very important to change the curriculum for the sake of formality and to add more non- music classes and practical programs, such as special programs or workshops for career development. Students should be more proactive to this situation and plan more for their music career. They need to research alternative solutions because the job markets are extremely competitive. For example, the student could research teaching positions or administrative positions in various kinds of community music schools, professional music organizations, and other music media companies including recording companies, music publishing companies, broadcasting companies.

Problems in Music Conservatory Education: 2. Cultural Capital and Diverse Musical Tradition in America

Music conservatories should reconsider not being conservative in their cultural capital, which is focused on traditional classical music, because current social organizations and music education systems in America are closely connected to the music of diverse immigrants. According to Peter McLaren, cultural capital explains the “ways of talking, acting, modes of style, moving, socializing, forms of knowledge, language practices, and values.” are unique to each place. In the United States, multi-cultural educational systems have generated a diverse musical tradition. Throughout the 20th century, especially since the 1960s, most major American cities have had significant immigrant communities that have retained their own distinct subcultures, rather than entirely assimilating into the mainstream of American culture. For example, there are various kinds of music in New York City, such as Euro-American music, Latin, the Caribbean, Asian, and Middle Eastern.
In the same manner, Henry Kingsbury, a conservatory-trained pianist and music educator, has criticized the curriculum of an American music conservatory compared to a non-Western musical culture. In his research, he recognized that the concept of the western notion of “talent” and its cultural characteristic is different from those of non-western societies and evaluated the curriculum of music teaching and the nurturing of musicality in the conservatory, such as the dynamics of orchestra rehearsals, master class, the characteristics of solo recitals.

Currently, I am thinking about our Internet2 class and music education. I have several issues about curriculum and professional development for music students. I think students who are majoring in music will need more various kinds classes including technology, science, and humanities; music conservatories should improve their limited curriculum as soon as possible.

Why should music conservatories' curriculum be improved? This is a perplexing question for music educators who have educated and trained themselves in American classical music conservatories, and have remained aloof from outside of debates and discussions on curriculum development. There are many reasons and answers for this question, in that music educators are eager to develop current educational systems no matter what the curricula contain. Also, they want to prevent current curriculum systems from potential problems in the future. Correspondingly, I think there are two main reasons for why the curriculum of music conservatories should be changed; it is important for new curricula of music conservatories to understand cultural dynamics in American society, and to give greater emphasis to the professional development of their students.

"Cassandra" (Electronic music, by Youngju Kang)

Finally, I completed a electronic music piece,Cassandra. On February, I had a chance to review the history of electronic music as well as listening to Varese's music. I am inspired by Varese's Poem Electronique so that I want to compose electronic poem with my vocal performance. I think It would be nice experience if I can improvise this piece with other instruments.

The Pi music and the constant number

Pi music is very interesting music. As we know, Pi number is endless and never be the same ! For example, 3.1415926...
Some composers think Pi number is a good source of creating new scale because it constantly changes all numbers and it always creates new pitch and harmony !

I think music and mathematics are closely connected to each other. Many composers have used mathematics formulas for their composition works since the numbers give us a great accuracy and create interesting musical structures in the composition. Of course, computer is also based on binary number theory so that we can control the system more properly.

I found a very nice piece of music based on Pi, the Pi String Quartet, composed by Kenji Kojima. The music was created from the constant Pi to 3000 decimal places. For this music, Kenji said that "a number plus one is a step of chromatic scale is upped. If the number 3 is C, 4 is C#. The first number 3 of Pi is played by tempo 31 on this music and after that a whole rest is placed, then the next number of Pi that is 1 is played by tempo 32, and after each number increments the tempo by 1."

I think Pi music and its number setting would be an interesting idea for Internet2 event. Performers and composers can improvise their music using the constant number of Pi as well as interacting with each other under this Pi number structure.

Skype as a performing art tool

I think Skype can be used as a performing art tool. Unlike iChat, Skype has more useful functions and a better connection for multiple users. Most of all, it is very convenient; it is easy and economical for the users to connect each other and create online conferences with multiple users. Therefore, we can use Skype as a performing art tool and think about our Internet2 performance when we have Internet2 events.

However, there are some problems when playing it through the Internet. The main problem is the speed and the quality of the sound. For the music performance, tempo or musical interaction is a very important factor to make a musical structure, which the music is making sense. Usually, the speed of visual image and sound quality of Skype are too slow to make immediate interactions or communications, especially when performances require fast tempo interactions among two or three locations.

Cassandra's Song

I made a movie, Cassandra's Song. I will use my own composition for this piece later, but I put Varese's Poem Electronique as a background music. According to Wikipedia, Cassandra was a daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy . Interestingly, she could hear the future after spending a night at Apollo's temple. At that time, the temple snakes licked her ears clean so that she prophesied all of the future. Apollo loved Cassandra, however, she ignored Apollo's love so that Apollo placed a curse on her. After that, no one would ever believe her predictions.

What is Abilene Network ?

Many references have adopted the name "Internet2" for a next-generation Internet backbone. However, Internet2 is a consortium and not a computer network. In fact, Internet2's previous name was Abilene Network. It is the U.S high-performance backbone network created by Internet2 community and it's high-speed backbone technologies have been developed by Internet2.

Many people think Internet2 is completely isolated from the public network. I think it is partially correct because it is not technically part of the Internet. However,Internet2 members are using the public Internet as their alternative access providing many resources.
